Jim Smith Australian Jazz 1930 – 1960: The Big Bands
By the 1930s Australia had big swing bands resident in most states supplying music for dancing and enjoying popular acclaim similar to the big swing bands of the United States. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide all had their big bands many of which lasted through until the 1960s.
The seminar will feature the history and recordings of the big bands of Frank Coughlan, Jim Davidson, Maurie Le Doeuff, Frank Buller and many, many others from the 1930s to the 1960s.
Darrell Coggins Charlie Parker: Bird & Bop
He died at the early age of 34 years and yet Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker, a leading figure of bebop, left a huge legacy of recordings; he was, and still is, influential amongst many musicians.
Darrell will trace Parker’s life and music – from Kansas City to New York and Los Angeles. Come and hear some of his earliest recordings, along with a selection of both his lesser and better known pieces.
